Southaven Kawasaki Yamaha
Southaven Kawasaki
Yamaha began innocently enough in the late 1960's as Mid South Cycle City - the
brain child of Mr. Bob McClain. Bob was the go-to guy in motorcycling in
the 60's. The shop was built in it's current location on Whitworth Drive as a small Kawasaki
sales and service facility. In 1970 Mr. Brad Vandivere and Mr. Jim Dendy purchased the shop from Mr.
McClain and began to slowly grow the business. As motorcycling grew in
popularity so did the little Kawasaki store in Southaven. The building was
enlarged to house all the new models Kawasaki had to offer as well as a larger
service facility to support the growing business. . Then those boys
from OPEC decided they would slow the production of crude oil into gasoline
causing the 'energy crisis' of the 70's. That caused the motorcycle
business to grow rapidly. In the mid 70's Mr. Dendy purchased Mr.
Vanvevere's half of the business and became the sole owner of the little
Kawasaki Shop in Southaven. Late in 1978 Mr. Dendy was in need of an experienced
parts manager to handle the ever growing motorcycle business. He hired
Mr. Don Lindholm to run the parts department, and he brought Yamaha with him.
Now the little shop that expanded needed to add on again to support the new
Yamaha line.
During this growing time Mr. Dendy's son Kirk was attending college at
Mississippi State University. When Kirk was home for breaks and during the summers he
would come in and work in the shop. Once Kirk graduated from MSU he joined
Jim and Don as a full time sales person and Shop Manager. During
this time the store name changed from Mid South Cycle City to Southaven Kawasaki Yamaha.
This name better reflected the scope of the business and it made both motorcycle
lines happy to see their brand names in the company's title. In 1993 Jim Dendy decided to retire and sell the business to his two top
dogs - Kirk and Don.
Kirk and Don continued to grow the business. They added a 2nd building
to house the growing watercraft business and expand the service department.
Their goal always has been to get the customer's toys back in the customers
hands in
the quickest time possible. That tradition continues even today.
